Jim Shelley & Book Of Kills

On This Day in 2003

On this day in 2003, Book of Kills (the Jane and Casey Firkin, Randy Simpson, Bill Bird, Jim version) played their third to last show together, appropriately enough at the Little Grill. It was a bit of a quirky performance (Wooly Bully into Don't Stop the Scream?) as I remember, though I think we played pretty well that night. By then I'm sure I already knew that the band was coming to an end. Practices were becoming increasingly difficult and I could feel everyone's interests shooting off in different directions. We'd go on to play another gig up in the Washington, D.C. area and then a final gig at CecilFest and that would be all. I've said it a million times: If all of us had just said fuck it, let's go for it and take off across America and just play everywhere that will have us, we would've probably eventually been able to make some real noise, but we didn't. We couldn't.

The set list for that night: Wooly Bully-->Don't Stop The Scream, Jesco White, Nelson, Accidentally Naked, Cave In, Antiman, Caroline, Style--> Bad Person, Clever, Running, Killing Time Again, I Hang Heavy-->Then I Kissed Her, If You Want It.

Thurston Moore was born on this day way back in 1958 and for that I am thankful.

"It's hard for bands to stick it out because people grow up, and it never really pays off. If you're looking for some sort of payoff, it's not gonna happen." -- Thurston Moore
