Jim Shelley & Book Of Kills

That Sound...

As you know, I've often pondered over the last 10-12 years the mystery that is Book Of Kills as filtered through the hearts and minds of me and Casey Firkin and Jane Firkin, and later, George Nipe III, and still later, Pablo Olivieri. I could never verbalize it until tonight when I came across some words about Neil Young written by Flea. Yes...Flea's words are about Neil Young but they also perfectly capture the essence of that weird, fractured, out of time, almost indefinable thing that is BOK: "It's such a mess [but] the sound is so deep, the groove is so deep — even when they're off, it still sounds great, because they feel it so much."

I wonder if that sound will ever fully blossom.
